When Kelly Barton was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2018, this once-healthy runner found herself on an unfamiliar path. She was scared, but she knew one thing for certain—she would fight the disease with everything she had. What Kelly hadn’t known at the time is that the community would support her in ways she couldn’t have imagined.
My Breast Friends 5K is Born
To celebrate the completion of nearly five months of chemotherapy, and with the encouragement of friends, Kelly organized the My Breast Friends 5K. She had only two goals for the event—to celebrate cancer survivors and raise funds that would benefit cancer survivors in the local community.
“I approached Oregon Cancer Foundation even though, at the time, I didn’t know much about them,” Kelly says. “I’d heard wonderful things—and I’ve since learned what they do and how they support cancer survivors, both financially and emotionally. As a survivor, I’ve participated in the foundation’s Survivorship Series and I’ve attended support group meetings—there’s such a need for this kind of support in our area.”
2019 Event Registration Underway
After a successful first year that raised $13,000, the event is back with a goal to raise $20,000 for Oregon Cancer Foundation. This year’s theme is once again the ‘80s. In addition to the My Breast Friends 5K, there will also be a 10K option for participants. Another addition to this year’s event is what Kelly is calling the “My Why Station.”
“There will be a place at the event where people can write the names of the people they are doing the run in honor or memory of, or bring photos of them. So, maybe it’s somebody who is in treatment right now, someone who is a survivor, or maybe your ‘why’ is someone who is no longer with us,” she says. “I think it’s going to be really powerful when we are crossing the finish line to see those names and photos.”
