Position: Executive Director
As executive director of the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute, Chris Achtien is always focused on the quality of care patients receive. A longtime veteran of the fight against cancer, he has nearly 30 years experience in health care and more than 17 years working directly in managing facilities that provide cancer services to communities.
Before coming to Eugene, Chris served as executive director of the Central Indiana Cancer Centers in Indianapolis, where he developed and constructed four integrated cancer centers and a CyberKnife facility. He also served as a board member for the Indiana Cancer Research Foundation, which provides education, screening and cancer research to patients in Central Indiana.
From a patient perspective, his work is mostly behind the scenes, but Chris continually ensures patients get the most advanced treatment options and the best care possible.
“I am very excited to be a part of Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and Research Center,” he says. “The caliber of physicians, breadth of cancer services and technology that is available in Eugene is world-class and compares favorably with other cancer programs in much larger areas.”
Achtien knows that patients who are more educated about their cancer, and those who feel the powerful emotion of hope, tend to do better. “Mine is a wonderful position to have. Because I’m helping people,” he says.
Achtien and his wife, Melissa, have four grown children, and two dogs round out the family. He enjoys the outdoors and is an accomplished cook.
