Charity Crosby has a lot of celebrate. “I’m feeling good. I have a whole bunch of energy and I’ve been told that I’m cancer free, so that’s exciting!” Charity says.
It’s been nearly two years since she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s feeling healthy now, but this Lane County real estate agent admits that cancer took its toll—physically, emotionally and financially. She says that the support she received from friends, family and the Oregon Cancer Foundation’s Financial Assistance Program are what helped her through the rough times.
“During five months of chemotherapy, I was only working two or three days a week, if I could. I live by myself, so I didn’t have anybody else I could rely on to help with the bills,” Charity says. “Having Oregon Cancer Foundation as a resource to help me get through that was incredible.”
Paying it forward
Charity will be volunteering with Oregon Cancer Foundation’s Bras for Cause campaign this fall.
The concept behind this colorful fundraiser is simple: community members and local businesses decorate bras, then the creations are showcased online at brasforcause.org and in-store at Dandelions Flowers & Gifts in Eugene.
The community is encouraged to donate by voting for their favorites—$1 = 1 vote—and 100% of the funds raised goes to the foundation to help provide emotional support programs, education, freezer meals and financial assistance for patients in Lane County with all types of cancers.
“Part of our role is to make sure patients are not having to make difficult choices between, say, buying gas to get to treatment or putting food on their table or heating their home,” says OCF Executive Director Amy Johnston. “We work with each patient to see how we can best serve them.”
Last year, Charity and nine other cancer survivors were honored and celebrated at Girl’s Night Out—the annual Bras for Cause celebration.
“That support kept me going—just having that comradery was a blessing,” she says.
